Ford Motor Company: The First 100 Years: A Celebration of Historic Photographs

Ford Motor Company: The First 100 Years: A Celebration of Historic Photographs
Compiled by the company's corporate historian, Bob Kriepke, the book chronicles Ford's history with a series of photographs accompanied by informative text. Included are Ford family pictures, old promotional fliers, candid photos of Ford employees at work, blueprints, and eye-opening panoramic shots of Ford complexes and products. In short, it is a compelling and fascinating look at Ford Motor Company's first century. The book begins with a rare photo of Henry Ford as a young man and the farmhouse in which he grew up. It documents Ford's early attempts at establishing his own company, including his success on the racetrack to interest investors. Once he launched Ford Motor Company he never looked back. Efficient factory and product design coupled with innovative ideas has kept Ford Motor Company at the forefront of the industry ever since. Among the most interesting photographs are images of Ford relaxing with friend and mentor Thomas Edison, a wide angle shot of thousands of Model Ts straight off the production line, early tractor prototypes, futuristic car designs from the 1930s, Ford racing cars throughout the years, and com-memorative events ranging from the millionth Ford car to the 100th year of Ford racing in 2001. Product photographs include numerous Ford vehicles on the drawing board and assembly line, such as Thunderbird, Mustang, Probe and Bronco, along with some tanks and ambulances from World War I and World War II. This collection of Ford photographs provides a fascinating glimpse at the men and women who have shaped the company throughout the years and celebrates the vehicles that have made Ford Motor Company an American icon.

No Man's Land by Ann Thomas,
No Man's Land by Ann Thomas,
"No Man's Land" is a surreal and terrifying place. It is a world empty of the living, consisting entirely of strange, often sinister interiors: spas that look like forensic laboratories; classrooms that fill us with vague, unsettling fears; offices; military installations; mortuaries. . . . We know that human beings people these places, but they have scurried away, leaving behind nothing but desks, machines, instruments, walls, ceilings, floors, lighting -- the impersonal, neutral artifacts of modern existence. An air of claustrophobia hangs over everything: there is no way in and no way out of these stifling spaces, either physically or ideologically. We need a good deal of persuading that these extraordinary environments actually exist in the real world. But they do. And for thirty years the photographer Lynne Cohen has been searching them out and recording them. No Man's Land brings together for the first time more than 100 of the most powerful of these images in both duotone and color from the 1970s up to the present day. Cohen began as a sculptor, but in 1971 turned to photography. Her work has certain affinities with Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades in that she collects fragments of the real world photographically and turns them into found installations. Her photography should be appreciated alongside the work of her peers in the area of contemporary art and photography, such as Dieter Appelt, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, and Jeff Wall. Cohen's photography has always been concerned with psychological, sociological, intellectual, and political artifice and her later images reveal a preoccupation with deception, manipulation, and control.

100 Best Companies for Working Mothers - The 100 Best Companies for working mothers was an evaluative list published by Working Mother Magazine in 2004, and is still considered a major benchmark of diversity and women's participation in corporate America. The list consists of the following companies, arranged in alphabetical order and with special honors denoted (includes some ties and/or honorable mentions that pushes the list just past 100):

Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award - In Major League Baseball, the Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award, first awarded in 1976, is a distinction given to the top relief pitcher in each league at the end of each season. Unlike other honors such as the Cy Young Award or Most Valuable Player Award, the Relief Man of the Year award is based objectively on statistical performance, rather than subjective opinion.

Walter Payton Man of the Year Award - The Walter Payton Man of the Year award is given annually by the National Football League honoring a player's volunteer and charity work, as well as his excellence on the field. Each year, a winner is selected from 32 nominees from the 32 different teams.
